On 15 June 2020, the Minister of Finance announced that persons registered for tourism goods and services tax would have the option to pay their goods and services tax (GST) dues to the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) in Rufiyaa. This option would be available for payments pertaining to taxable periods between 1 April 2020 and 30 September 2020.
As per the GST Act, the Minister has the authority to determine that tourism sector GST, which by default must be paid in US Dollar or any other foreign currency determined by the Commissioner General of Taxation, may be paid in Rufiyaa.
